This year, we are launching a new initiative of more structured oral exam preparation for the PGY-5 residents. Our goal is to make the sessions as useful as possible for the residents and practical to implement for faculty. In recognition of your time, you will be given a letter from the Emergency Medicine Program for your teaching dossier.

In discussions with the residents, we have set up a model with several small practice sessions, with two to three staff, and three larger practice sessions with seven staff. The smaller sessions will take place between March 29 and April 14 and the larger sessions between April 19 and May 1. The sessions will be held at a central location that will be booked by the program.

Small Sessions:

  • Each study group will spend approximately 90 minutes with each faculty member
  • Cases will be given to individual residents, observed by their group so that everyone benefits
  • Staff should bring their own cases - if you need help developing cases, please let us know!
  • Time commitment per session: Approximately three hours

Large Sessions:

  • Each resident will spend approximately 20 minutes with each faculty member to simulate the Royal College format
  • Staff should bring their own cases; however, some guidance will be provided regarding topics to make sure the exam is balanced
  • Time commitment: Approximately three hours

We are hoping for broad participation by faculty from all of our teaching sites in this initiative and, with that in mind, once all availabilities have been submitted, we’ll do our best to make sure that everyone who wishes to participate is able to do so. Since this is a new initiative we’ll also be looking for your feedback on how to improve for next year. This is meant to replace the ad hoc practice sessions that happened previously; however, if there isn’t a time that works well for you, and the residents are able to schedule a time with you separately, that’s great!

How to sign up:

  1. Please submit your availability here: http://doodle.com/poll/5sgx2b6pq5ss67y4
  2. We will confirm which dates you have been assigned early in the new year
  3. If you have any questions, please contact Kaif Pardhan (kaif.pardhan@gmail.com)

Note for faculty from UHN and SickKids:

Dave Carr (UHN) and Max and Jason (SickKids) are also organizing site-specific practice sessions, which will have a separate sign up from this one.

Thanks so much for helping our residents be their best!
