Our goal in the Department of Medicine is to support the well-being of each member of our department, while taking actionable steps to identify and address systemic barriers and move towards an equitable society. We expect all members of our community to take responsibility for creating an inclusive and professional climate where faculty and trainees can reach their full potential. The three tenets of Wellness; Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI); and Mentorship are deeply related and our leadership team works closely to ensure these values are infused in every aspect of the DoM, to ultimately achieve a culture which attracts, welcomes, supports and promotes diverse talent throughout the academic lifecycle.

Dr. Umberin Najeeb

Vice-Chair, Culture and Inclusion

Dr. Umberin Najeeb is a clinician educator in the Department of Medicine, centre researcher at the Wilson Centre and staff internist at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. She completed her medical training from University of Peshawar and an accelerated residency in Internal Medicine from University of Toronto (UofT) followed by Education Scholars Program from the Center of Faculty Development.

Supporting our faculty and trainees through the challenges of life as a physician, especially those heightened by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Working to counter systemic injustice and build a Department where all members can thrive in a safe and inclusive space.

Building a community of supportive mentors who guide our faculty towards personal and academic success.

Facilitating application and mentorship of Black and Indigenous residents in the Department of Medicine by fostering mentorship opportunities among students, residents and faculty. 

We rely on the contributions of our outstanding clinician-teachers to deliver the highest quality medical education across the learning continuum.
