Dr. Sam Sabbah recently changed his academic job description from clinician-teacher to clinician in quality and innovation. He started his faculty appointment as lecturer, clinician-teacher, in 2010. The new job description as clinician in quality and innovation more accurately reflects Dr. Sabbah’s contributions to our division.
Since Dr. Sabbah’s Continuing Faculty Appointment Review (CFAR) in 2013, he has completed a master’s in Health Information Science through the University of Victoria. In addition, he has obtained a certificate in Quality Improvement and Patient Safety through the Centre for Quality Improvement and Patient Safety (CQUiPS), completed the Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Co-learning Curriculum and completed the Leadership Strategies For Emerging Healthcare Executives course at the Harvey T. Chan School of Public Health at Harvard.
Dr. Sabbah’s focus has been on quality improvement (QI), especially as it relates to IT innovations and increasing patient safety. He has led numerous projects of critical importance in emergency departments, many of which have successfully been implemented and have improved care as a result. Most noteworthy was his role as one of two physician leads on the enterprise-wide advanced clinical documentation project at UHN. He is also a member of the information mobility steering committee which has helped shape UHN policy on the use of mobile devices and implemented an enterprise-wide mobile device management platform.
Dr. Sabbah has overseen numerous QI projects that have had a significant impact on quality of care and patient safety. This includes the implementation of a multisite model of care that allows stable ED patients needing urgent internal medicine consult or short stays to be discharged from the ED at UHN with rapid follow up care at Women’s College Hospital, which has reduced the ED overcrowding while improving the patient experience. He also led the development and implementation of 19 evidence-based order sets to standardize and streamline care and ensure adherence to best practice.
Dr. Sabbah has established himself as an accomplished clinician in quality and innovation. His contributions have made him an important asset in our division.
