Guidelines for Reporting Trial Protocols and Completed Trials Modified Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic and Other Extenuating Circumstances: The CONSERVE 2021 Statement. Dr. Chan was the senior author of the CONSERVE Statement, which was published in JAMA with 33 citations since July 2021. He co-led an international team of 40 trialists, journal editors (Lancet, JAMA, BMJ, PLOS), ethicists, regulators, trial registries, and funders. CONSERVE provides guidance for reporting clinical trials that have been impacted by COVID-19 and other extenuating circumstances. Tens of thousands of ongoing non-COVID trials have had to unexpectedly undergo substantial protocol modifications due to the pandemic. Because these major amendments can affect the study's validity, ethics, results, and interpretation, it is critical that they be carefully considered and transparently reported when eventually published.
