Aylin Reid, Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs Fiscal Year 2021 (FY21) Neurofibromatosis Research Program (NFRP) New Investigator Award – Early Stage Investigator, United States Department of Defense.
Project Title: Investigation of Cell Types Responsible for Seizure Generation in a Model of Neurofibromatosis Type 1
Brief summary: Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) can lead to a variety of neurological symptoms, including seizures and epilepsy. While some epilepsy cases in NF1 are related to an intracranial lesion, others appear to be secondary to the genetic mutation itself. The mechanisms behind this are unknown. Dr. Reid and her team have previously demonstrated an increased seizure risk in a mouse model of NF1. With this funding they will now employ targeted molecular genetic, optogenetic, and pharmacological approaches to investigate the neuronal cell types involved in initiating the seizure activity. Work will be done in collaboration with fellow UHN researchers Drs. Taufik Valiante, James Eubanks, and Gelareh Zadeh.
