Legacy Mentorship Series

This division has many outstanding professors with national/international prominence who are leaders in their respective fields. Many of our trainees, both residents and fellows, as well as faculty can learn from their experience – pitfalls, resilience, balance of life - and provide academic mentorship. We take this opportunity to document their excellence and contributions to the history of this division.

McEwan Jones Lecture/Faculty Research Day

Established by Dr. John R. Wherrett in 1986, the McEwan-Jones lecture/Neurology Faculty Research Day is an annual event to inform each other within the division of our research interests, hot research topics, any global interests, and to encourage collaborations across institutions. The McEwan-Jones lecture always precedes the event with a 1-hour lecture from an eminent MS specialist.

Dr. Vera Bril Neuromuscular Day

Established by Dr. Vera Bril in 2002, Dr. Vera Bril Neuromuscular Day (formerly Neuromuscular Day) is an annual event to disseminate advances in neuromuscular diseases to members of our division, as well as community neurologists. The event starts with a 1-hour lecture by an eminent neuromuscular specialist and followed by presentations from members of our division, including trainees, where we showcase our own research interests as well as present innovative research from the global neuromuscular community. This event was renamed in 2024, in recognition of Dr. Bril's extensive contributions to the field of neuromuscular medicine, both locally in Toronto and on a global scale. Notably, she holds the distinction of being the first female neurologist within our division to have an academic day named in her honor.

Richardson Lang Day

Established in 2006, the Richardson/Lang Day (formerly J.C. Richardson Day and officially announced in June 2018) is an annual half‐day afternoon event to various subspecialties where faculty members were asked to present in either a debate or a "what's hot" format. This event was meant to be lighthearted as our faculty discuss opposing arguments. If one specific theme involves more time for discussion, then the division could focus and dedicate the event to the topic. (i.e. MAID, medical assistance with dying). Traditionally, it would wrap up with a business meeting at the end of the event.

Silversides Lecture/Neurology Residents’ & Fellows’ Day

Established by Dr. John R. Wherrett in 1981, the JL Silversides Day is an annual event to celebrate the graduation of the adult neurology residents and fellows of the division. As part of this day, the JL Silversides Visiting Professor is an internationally-recognized faculty member invited to deliver two named lectures and participate in the events of the day. The first lecture is at the weekly Krembil Brain Institute (KBI) Rounds, and the second lecture is at the afternoon event that also includes research presentations by residents and fellows and annual division awards.
