Topic: A life well lived: Navigating advance care planning, goals of care and MAID

Learning Objectives

  • Review an evidence-based approach and framework to serious illness conversations

  • Share learnings from a collaborative neuro-palliative care clinic

  • Provide overview and clinical update on MAID legislation

This presentation will explore the critical elements of navigating complex conversations around advance care planning, goals of care, and Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) within the neurology patient population. As neurological conditions often involve progressive and unpredictable trajectories, early, proactive discussions are essential in aligning patient care with individual values and goals. Participants will gain insight into an evidence-based approach for initiating and guiding serious illness discussions. The session will also highlight key learnings from a collaborative neuro-palliative care clinic, showcasing the benefits of an interdisciplinary approach to managing serious neurological conditions. Finally, an update on the latest MAID legislation will be provided, offering practical insights on its clinical implications and ethical considerations in end-of-life care.

This keynote will be followed by an interactive, skills-based learning session focusing on equipping participants with effective frameworks and practical tools to navigate serious illness conversations. Using real-world case studies, attendees may engage in role-playing exercises, where they practice skills like empathetic communication, decision-making support, and delivering difficult news.
