The University of Toronto, Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism, spans eight Toronto Academic Health Sciences Network (TAHSN) hospitals and integrated health networks and is comprised of 51 full-time faculty MDs, all of whom are actively engaged in leading edge academic activities of patient care, teaching, research, and quality improvement and innovation. We also have over 30 part-time and adjunct appointees based at Greater Toronto Area community sites and two full-time PhD scientists in the Division. The division has the greatest level of research productivity and impact in Canada and is the nation's largest subspecialty training program.
Faculty have clinical expertise in all areas of endocrinology, including diabetes, lipid disorders, obesity, thyroid disease and thyroid cancer, osteoporosis and metabolic bone disease, endocrine reproductive health and less common diseases and neoplasms of endocrine glands such as the pituitary, adrenal and parathyroid glands. The Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism has active teaching programs in all of these areas and active research in most. Our faculty members are major contributors to the development of national and international clinical practice guidelines.
Our MD faculty work closely with PhD scientists from a number of departments such as Physiology, Biochemistry, Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology. And we have collaborative clinical and research programs with members of the Departments of Surgery, Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery, and Oncology. This collaborative environment promotes and facilitates the success of endocrinology and metabolism research activities. The integration of diabetes research across multiple hospitals and basic science departments is actively supported by the Banting and Best Diabetes Centre, an extra-departmental unit of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto which is closely linked with the division.
Our teachers and educators make major contributions to the MD, Postgraduate MD and Continuing Professional Development programs at the University of Toronto and our clinical training programs and rotations are known for their outstanding quality.
